Many abilities now have special effects, as listed near the bottom of the in-depth abilities page. This is Emerald version, only.

As listed on the in-depth abilities page, Emerald version introduces special effects for many abilities.
I’ve already said that a Pokemon with Magma Armor and Flame Body on a trainer’s belt will result in an egg hatching in half the number of steps. But that’s definitely not all that’s new!
Intimidate and Keen Eye keep low level Pokemon away, while Hustle and Vital Spirit attract higher level Pokemon out in the wild.
White Smoke makes wild Pokemon appear less often. During a sandstorm, Sand Veil will also make wild Pokemon appear less often. Pressure and Arena Trap, oppositely, make wild Pokemon appear more often.
Is fishing too difficult? Try bringing a Pokemon with the Suction Cups or Sticky Hold ability with you, and Pokemon will be easier to catch on the rod.
Static will result in more commonly encountering Electric Pokemon in an area, and Steel types are more common when a Pokemon on your belt has Magnet Pull.
Synchronize will increase the chance of the wild Pokemon having the same nature as the Pokemon with Synchronize. Just be sure this Pokemon is heading your party. Edit: I was wrong, this doesn’t work for legendary Pokemon.
To increase the amount of wild Pokemon holding an item, head your party with a Nincada – it has Compoundeyes.
Cute Charm will increase the chances of finding a wild Pokemon of the opposite gender than the Pokemon with this ability.
Is Cut just not cutting it with its puny grass-cutting range? Hyper Cutter will extends its range.
Are you bored? Lonely? In search of compainionship? Would you like your PokeNav to be like a lightning rod, pulling in call after call on your Entry Call? Then be sure to bring along a Pokemon with the Lightningrod ability to get just that!
Or, if the sounds of wild Pokemon is enough to keep you from being lonely, catch a Pokemon with the Swarm ability, and as you move from route to route, you’ll hear the cries of wild Pokemon more than usual.
Okay, who’s still not going to buy Emerald version?

Now, I will buy 2 Emerald games….
If you put something more, maybe even three ^^
By Arty2 on Oct. 17th, 2004 at 6:28 PM
Simply amazing… it makes the game even more complex :)
By qgpr on Oct. 17th, 2004 at 7:15 PM
oh my god, its like if they had read my mind. I wonder what else they added to this game.
By Jason on Oct. 17th, 2004 at 10:12 PM
im getting english and japanese emerald :D
By Armando Meziat on Oct. 17th, 2004 at 10:42 PM
Why 50 pokémon? Only 40 is enough :P
Now all that’s left is to see if there’s a way to easily get pokémon with higher IVs, or with a good Hidden Power :P
Either way, it makes me wonder why didn’t GF think of all this before…
By System Error on Oct. 17th, 2004 at 11:03 PM
Darn you Meowth. Darn you to the depths of the underworld! But in a good way. Now you’re making us even more anxious to get Emerald!
By Tallis on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 2:57 AM
Very nice discovery Meowth. It still makes me wonder what other secrets lay deep within the core of Emerald. But how exactly do you find out such discoveries? Just from trial and error?
By Afriscot on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 3:01 AM
As good as all of this is, I kinda wish that some of the Special Ability Effects were better.
Sand Veil and Swarm’s Effects, for example, are kinda pointless.
By Meowth346 on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 4:58 AM
Tallis, I searched for this information while looking over disassembled data for breeding and egg hatching, specifically the part where the amount of steps left to hatch an egg drops by two points instead of one if a Pokemon has one of those hot-body abilities. Data for other abilities was stored in the same basic area. Trial and error come in by making sure I have the right data down, although I still have to check a few things listed to ensure I didn’t make any small mistakes. I would have finished that by now, but I was too tired this morning to continue.
By Tallis on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 6:31 AM
Wait, so you are breaking into the codeing of the Games? I’m guessing you’ve had the time and experience to learn so much about GBA game builds and eve nthe Pokemon Games from your codeing experiences, but wow. I definatly have to say that is amazing that you have taken the time to break this game down so far.
You can take as much time as you need by my book. I just can’t wait to see what other new game points you might discover in the games. (and I’m guessing that alot of these features are only in Emerald or you would have already found them in the other Advanced Games.)
And as a question, How did you come to gain su much knowledge on the ability to diveing into the codeing if the games?
By Tala on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 7:28 AM
With scychronize, catching a Pokemon with a good nature and with the great IV is more possible. This means easy breeding due to the fact that the Pokemon with the great nature can be obtained 50% of the time. Saves breeding time.
think about it, Everstone actually have a real use…
By Jason on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 9:48 AM
Pokemon with Scychronize + caught pokemon to breed with everstone = PWN3D
By Emperor ServingSpoon on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 12:51 PM
I guess I may as well delay getting my wonderful Sandslash until Emerald. What with the tower in the desert with only Sandshrew and Trapinch, and then any breeding I would’ve wanted to do, as well as infinite Rock Slides and Sword’s Dances… It feels like Emerald has more secrets than a Zelda game!
By PurpleKecleon on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 4:11 PM
I’m glad you told us about Lightningrod, because, I was bored, lonely, AND in search of companionship! sticks a Manectric into her party
Gee… I wish they’d have done something special for ALL abilties instead of a select few! How nice THAT would have been!
By Tallis on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 4:45 PM
Oh, and Meowth, just wondering…
Did they change any of the held items Wild pokemon may have from Ruby and Sapphire?
Also, did you ever have a page set up from Ruby/Sapphire/FireRed/LeafGreen Based on the items you might find on pokemon?
By Porygon on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 6:53 PM
When you say we “increase the chance of” do you know by how much?
I’m mostly interested in the chance of getting the same nature using Synchronize. :D
By Melkor on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 8:40 PM
Tallis… there is a section which tells you all the held items…
Go to Advanced —> Stats and Battle —> Basic
By betbest1 on Oct. 18th, 2004 at 9:36 PM
I wish this was in FR/LG. The held item thing means easier Lucky Egg. But, it sounds really cool.
By Meowth346 on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 12:06 AM
Tallis, yeah, that’s basically it – going through the game’s compiled ROM data. As for how I’ve gained the knowledge, all I can say is that I’ve been doing this since a bit after Red/Green came out in Japan. As for held items, I’ve considered giving them their own page, apart from the basic data page which happens to list that, but I never got around to making one. I haven’t checked yet to see if any of the wild Pokemon items have changed, I don’t think. I should do that… I planned to, but I didn’t have Emerald at the time, then my copy of the game kept hitting delays on shipping, and I forgot about it.
Porygon, if I list exact percentages on day one, then every Pokemon site’ll be able to list exact percentages on day one ;) I’m not sure when I’ll get to adding exact values, but you have a pretty high chance of the opponent having the same nature with Syncronize.
As for Fire/Leaf, I’m sure that “Water Blue” or whichever is the third will have it. But, Safari Zone Pokemon should be uneffected by this, since it’s the player who enters battle. I don’t know if those Pokemon are effected or not, though. A good way to test woudl be to catch a handful while carrying a Pokemon with Syncronize, then checking their natures.
This comment field can really use a larger text box… I’ll have to add that to my todo list…
By Animelee on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 5:00 AM
I can’t wait until I get the money to order Emerald, Dash, and the DS next month…
Anyways, a bit off-topic, but why does everyone keep mentionning “WaterBlue” or “ThunderYellow”? I mean, LeafGreen and FireRed were created just so we could get the Pokémon that were missing in Ruby, Sapphire, and Colosseum. Emerald was created out of tradition for making a special edition game for each generation, but since Pearl and Diamond were announced, and no “WaterBlue” was announced, I doubt anything after Emerald will be coming out for the current Advanced Generation.
By Meowth346 on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 6:01 AM
Gold/Silver were announced before Yellow came out. Ruby/Sapphire were announced before Crystal came out. Water Blue was trademarked along with Fire Red and Leaf Green. That’s partly what I’m going on, Animelee.
By Animelee on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 7:58 AM
Yeah, but if you check out Junichi Masuda’s journal, he says that he fought for Nintendo of America to keep the remakes as LeafGreen and FireRed, instead of chaning them to FireRed and WaterBlue out of Japan. I’m betting Nintendo licensed all of the possible names before deciding on what they were going to do with the games out of Japan.
That’s true, but the Advanced Generation has done things much differently than with GRBY and GSC. I mean, with those generations, there were two games (Green/Red & Gold/Silver), and then their Special Editions (Blue and Crystal). Of course, Yellow was an exception, seeing as the cartoon series was fairly new in Japan, and they couldn’t let the opportunity pass them by.****
And especially now that we can get all 386 Pokémon (except Celebi out of Japan), and the Special Edition for this generation [Hoenn] has been released (Emerald), I’m betting Pearl/Diamond will be the next games.
In a few interviews I have, Junichi Masuda and Tsunekaz Ishihara have said that LeafGreen/FireRed was an attempt to reach out to the little kids of this decade, much like us and the original Green/Red. In my [humble?] opinion, there will be no Special Edition for LeafGreen/FireRed. Part of my reasoning is wishful thinking, as I am tired of spending money on remakes, and part of my reasoning is that I really, truly think that Emerald has wrapped up this generation. Besides, it’s most likely that Pearl/Diamond will be coming out on November 21, 2005, right? So if they do release a Special Edition for LeafGreen/FireRed, it’ll no doubt be just a few short months before Pearl/Diamond come out, and sales won’t be as hot, as people would be saving their money for Pearl/Diamond.
I hope I haven’t come off as a snob in my comment, by the way. ^^;;
**** = Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE GAME FREAK – they’re my all-time favourite game company, and they always will me. No, scratch that – they’re my all-time favourite company, period. It’s just obvious that they love money, and who doesn’t, I know I do. I just think they went overboard with Advanced Generation, making us buy so many games to get all the Pokémon, items, and only two regions… They could’ve easily packed together Kanto/Johto/Hoenn, and all 386 Pokémon, into Ruby/Sapphire, and then of had a Special Edition in Emerald. Not to mention they took away a lot of great features that Crystal had… They didn’t have to remake Green/Red to get new fans, they could’ve just worked super-hard on Ruby/Sapphire, and the onslaught of new fans would’ve came naturally.
Anyways, sorry for going off-topic, it’s just that I don’t see a WaterBlue in the future, and I think the registered trademark was created because NoA wasn’t sure what they would do with LeafGreen.
Don’t get me wrong, I will continue to support GAME FREAK and get all the games they release, and I will get Emerald next month – Entry Call, updated graphics, W.Adapter, 386 can be used, better breeding and EV training, etc.! It’s just that they know they’ve got us all by the wallet because of our blind devotion to them, and they’re taking advantage of it, like an evil corporation… :(
By Emperor ServingSpoon on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 11:28 AM
Were Yellow and Crystal announced before Gold/Silver and Ruby/Sapphire, though? You seem to keep mentioning how they were announced before the others were released, but if they(Yellow and Crystal) were still announced before the others then I’m inclined to think there’ll be no third addition to FireRed and LeafGreen. Of course, I just don’t want to have to buy a second third version…
By Afriscot on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 2:01 PM
I was thinking…
It would’ve been nice if they had made a Special Ability Effect for Groudon that slowly healed your Grass types outside of battle for every step you took, and a Special Ability Effect for Kyogre that did the same thing for Water types.
By Noga on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 2:59 PM
…. and then you arrive at Pokémon Center with your Groudon/Kyogre team ;)
By Arty2 on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 7:04 PM
Simply great :)
By Angel on Oct. 19th, 2004 at 9:15 PM
Safari Zone Pokemon are at least affected by the static ability (I had a pikachu in the first slot and lots of pikachus appeared one after another, that make a lot easier to find one with the light ball attached).
A question, I’m not sure if its a bug but in the safari zone, in the area that opens with the g/s pokemon, in the far south left corner whenever i use the itemfinder it points to the trees, though i already get all the items in the area and doesn’t seem to be anymore.
By yamipoli on Oct. 20th, 2004 at 5:48 AM
Angel, prehaps it wants you to stand at a certain spot to dig up an item (like the Macho Brace in F/L, except that that only shows if you stand on the exact spot..)
By Angel on Oct. 20th, 2004 at 7:09 AM
I’ve already tried that standing on every avaible spot, nothing. Keeps pointing to the trees…
By Pikachu025 on Oct. 20th, 2004 at 3:55 PM
I found a PP Up in the south-west Johto-Pokémon-Area. Three spaces under the PokéBlock-Thingy.
By GrnMarvl13 on Oct. 20th, 2004 at 11:24 PM
Angel, I keep having the same type of thing happen on LeafGreen. Over by the Power Plant, it keeps pointing to a patch of land that’s impossible to reach, and there’s another one shortly north of there next to the Pokemon Center. Very frustrating. Very confusing, as well.
By Pikachu025 on Oct. 21st, 2004 at 6:28 PM
I found the Item at the Power Plant one space below the lower-right thingy that is conected with the plant.

Question: Where is my screenshot gone?
By Meowth346 on Oct. 22nd, 2004 at 12:36 AM
ROM image screenshots that far into the game tend to be of a player who’s playing illegally rather than by paying for the game. A digital photograph of the location will be fine, but not a ROM image screenshot.
By Pikachu025 on Oct. 22nd, 2004 at 10:33 AM
Well, that screenshot was from my own save file dumped on the PC.
I’ll do an photograph as soon as I find my digital cam, ok?
By Pikachu025 on Oct. 22nd, 2004 at 10:39 AM
… well, maybe not -_-“
I remember that I got that Item yesterday so I cannot post a exact localation anymore.
The only thing that I could give you is a pic of an german game, is that OK?
I don’t understand why a ROM made from my own card and a save thats also from my own card is not OK, but if you don’t like it…
By Luminate on Oct. 22nd, 2004 at 6:57 PM
I am gonna get it as soon as i got some money. I just got to have the amazing game!
My god. Emerald keeps better and better every day. So now I’ll have like 50 Pokemon to get for it (Ditto with personalities and Synchronizers with personalities).
