Pokémon Forever

Pokemon + Special Move = Event Egg

Posted on 11 Mar 2005

It looks like PokePark goers can prepare their game to receive a Pokemon egg with a special move known.

I haven’t yet tried recovering the full update.

The Wonder Card says something along the lines of (I think – I just gave it a quick glance):

“Pokemon Egg Present Card, 2005 PokePark”

“Start your game and go to the second floor of the Pokemon Center! The person there will give you a Pokemon egg!”

“After receiving your Pokemon egg, data will be saved!”

…….. Hmmmm…. That sounds kinda interesting but Nintendo never seems to give away anything good… well for battle wise, maybe save that surfing Pikachu/Pichu.

Interesting news nonetheless.

Has it been announced what the Special Egg Moves will be yet for these Pokemon?

I wonder what Wynaut will get as it’s Special Egg Move…

Well, if players can use their DSs to download eggs to their Ru/Sa/Fr/Lg/Em Game Paks, then this proves that DS software can not only read GBA data (as proven with Pokémon Dash), but also write to it. This means there’s absolutely no reason why Nintendo can’t make Diamond and Pearl backwards compatible.

What Pokemon is it again?

I like the fact that there are event eggs, it’s more fair than a whole new pokemon. :P

Oh, to live in Japan… So lucky…

What are those moves?

Woopert, they still can make it uncompatible if they want to. There is one reason less, nothing more. IMHO, I think making it uncompatible isn’t that bad, since it guarantees people to try to breed new Pkmn isntead of relaxing with already-trained ones. And that ensures they will be able to introduce new and more interesting things to the metagame, which a really hope (instead of more Pkmn)

Warning: Long Post

True, Melkor, but let’s not forget about GSC. Nintendo could have easily made those games incompatible with RGBY, but since both generations basically ran on the same hardware, making GSC tradable with RGBY was pretty easy. Plus, they still updated the metagame by adding two new types, allowing Pokémon to hold items, splitting Special into separate Sp.Attack and Sp.Defense stats, introducing genders, and so on.

I’m actually not that upset with Nintendo for not making the GBA versions linkable with the old games, because I know the drastic differences in hardware (the GBA is basically 2 systems in one – the standard GBA hardware and modified GBC hardware – and knows which hardware to use because of a tiny switch in the cartridge slot) didn’t allow it. They would have to do something drastic, such as using specially designed carts with a slot for RGBYGSC carts, which I’m sure would’ve been impractical to newcomers. So they just took the opportunity to overhaul the internal stat data.

Now, as I stated before, they can easily make D/P compatible with the GBA versions, although I see your point about being able to breeze through these games with old L100s. Nintendo will probably take care of this by doing something similar to Fr/Lg, in which you couldn’t trade with R/S(/E) until a certain point late in the game. And as for metagame updates, they could revise the stat system again but still be backwards compatible by using some sort of conversion formula.

It’s just that I know a lot of people weren’t very enthusiastic about having to re-catch all of their old favorites in the GBA games, and will be even less so if they have to re-catch them AGAIN in D/P; some have even refused to get any current or future Pokémon games simply because they’re incompatible with their old 8-bit games.

Finally, a major new Pokémon game with absolutely no new Pokémon would seem pointless no matter how heavily they overhaul the metagame. Could you imagine what GSC and RSE would be like with no Pokémon other than the original 151? One could have traded all of their old Pokémon from previous games and already have a complete Pokédex in the new games, drastically reducing the game’s lifespan. Plus, there are still several type combos (such as Bug/Electric or Water/Steel) that have yet to be made into actual Pokémon.

Are you serious?

Not being able to trade with the Gameboy (notadvance) games wasn’t a loss. I mean come on. X_x They’re too different things.

I think it’s possible to bring your team over to D/P, because they were able to do that in Dash. I doubt the new pokemon will be on GBA though, wouldn’t you rather have your old Pokemon on the new one?

What have been all the pokemon and all the moves gotten through machines like these? It’d be interesting to list all of these and how they would have been obtained legally.

By Woopert on Mar. 12th, 2005 at 7:38 PM

adamgnome: I myself didn’t have much of a problem with not being able to import Pokémon from the old 8-bit games to the GBA versions, since I mostly only traded between the two generations to get certain Pokémon, such as the orginal starters and legendaries. I was just thinking of others, such as those on IGN’s forums, some of whom are actually quite furious that they couldn’t import their old Pokémon.

Wooper, they could have linked 1st/2nd and 3rd generations if they wanted to. In fact, it could have been a good way to sell a new product that allowed you to do that, or introducing it to Colosseum (or even in the rpg games themselves) or whatever, it is not so difficult to connect those games somehow and to convert the data (the new data could be “random” as they are when battling a wild Pkmn).

For me it is not enough to limit the tradeability to getting late in the game, that’s not much time for me and for a lot of people, and, since the starters EV’s won’t be well given (unless you go into too many problems) I would still prefer to use the already well-trained ones.

I understand why people firstly went mad about having no tradeability between GBC and GBA games, but the metagame changes made me see it differently, what could we have done with the EV’s, for example?? Nothing, till Emerald at least. And was the EV’s system change for bad?? No, at all, it’s the best thing they added to the metagame. So, if we want to have better things in the metagame we “should let” free the hands of the developers, if they can make it backwards compatible, ok, but if they have to forget about it for better things, why not?

” Wooper, they could have linked 1st/2nd and 3rd generations if they wanted to.”

You do realize that the newer pokemon have a different data format than their earlier counterparts. Not to mention the need for revamping the metagame and selling more GBA’s and FRLG re-makes than if they had allowed trading with RBYGSC?

If the system stays the same we should be allowed to trade. If it is a new system of play, then by all means start us over again without hopefully dividing the pokemon out over so many titles.

“Wooper, they could have linked 1st/2nd and 3rd generations if they wanted to.”

No, they couldn’t, at least not without special hardware. Allow me to explain what I said earlier in a little more detail:

Let’s say we have 2 GBAs, one with a Crystal game and the other with a Sapphire game. The GBA with Crystal would run on the legacy Z80-based GBC hardware, while the one with Sapphire would run on the GBA’s standard ARM7-based hardware, and these two sets of hardware are incompatible with each other. The hardware that Crystal runs on only works with an old GB(C) link cable (I actually tried linking my Gold and Silver games with a GBA cable once, and only one game actually knew it had a cable attached) while the hardware running Sapphire would only work with either a GBA cable or GCN/GBA cable. Because of this, there would be no way to make Colosseum compatible with the Generation 1/2 games the same way it connects with the Generation 3 games; they would instead have to program Colosseum to recognize the Game Boy Player.

(Source: [ link ] (en.wikipedia.org) )

Of course, if it WERE possible to make a GBA Pokémon game compatible with both the Generation 1/2 games and the official Generation 3 games, I’m sure some unofficial homebrew developer would’ve done just that.
