Well, even though I’m not exactly a rabid fan of Genius Sonority, I guess I oughta give them some credit for giving the main character an actual backstory; something we’ve yet to see in any of the handheld versions, except maybe having a Gym Leader for a dad in RSE.
Oh, and Meowth, the main character’s sister is named Mana, not Mina. ;)

Hmm, Lugia’s color doesn’t look black to me. It’s more like purple.
By Donald on May. 13th, 2005 at 7:05 PM
Shadow Lugia… hmm, so that’s how it’s going to be gotten legally.
Though I can see a Bonus Disc that gives Jirachi, an Old Sea Chart, an AuroraTicket, and a Celebi as a pre-order incentive.

We can only hope, Donald.
Anyway… I couldn’t see the pictures yesterday for whatever reason, but now that I can, I’ll say this:
I’m still upset that there won’t be a playable female main character, especially since I dislike this particular character design even more than white-haired Brendan or the anorexic Colosseum kid, but at least the graphics actually look seem up to Gamecube quality now. That Pokemon Center with the glass windows looks great.
And there had better be wild Pokemon. Personally, I liked the whole concept of catching a Pokemon while simultaneously fighting an entire team, so in a lot of ways I’m glad to see Shadow Pokemon and the Snag Machine return–I liked that mechanic. It’s just that because of the complete lack of variety in your possible teams, Colo had almost no replay value whatsoever, and simply adding wild Pokemon alone would have done so, so much to fix that.

Thanks for that correction Woopert – I was in such a rush I misread her name, then that stuck in my mind.
About the colour, Filb, I’m going by what the official Japanese sources refer to it by. Maybe it’s a blackened blue, resulting in dark purple?
By Animelee on May. 13th, 2005 at 8:16 PM
Did they use the word “kuro”?
By Meowth346 on May. 13th, 2005 at 9:03 PM
Yup, “kuroi” with the kanji for “kuro”, “black”.

More information will come out on 15th July, so stay tuned :3

Well, not to bring up the dead, but take a gander a Jynx. I mean, she was black, then purple, then black, and now back to purple.
Perhaps ‘purple’ is the ‘politcally correct black’ -_-

I’m really hoping they’ll revamp the battle system… Stadium-style battles are excruciatingly slow. x.x And I really hope they’re updating the sprites… some of them are holdovers from the first Stadium. I mean, come on…
By Zhen Lin on May. 14th, 2005 at 6:32 PM
Sometimes, they use dark blue or dark purple to archieve a blacker-than-black effect.
Also, I’d take the opportunity to note that Brendan’s white “hair” is actually a hat in the Pokémon Special manga. Of course, he’s never ever seen without it, but, he has a closet full of them…
By Joshua on May. 14th, 2005 at 8:47 PM
Do you think the pokemon will have the cries they had in the stadium series?
By Joshua on May. 14th, 2005 at 8:55 PM
I think the graphics in Pokemon XD looks 10x kamehame… just kidding, anyways I think the graphics looks 10x better than Colosseum.
By baratron on May. 14th, 2005 at 10:39 PM
lol that was freaky - I typed in a comment, pressed Preview Comment, it previewed OK, yet hitting Post Comment apparently deleted it all? Anyone else having that problem?!
Anyway, what I actually MEANT to say was: Argh - you HAVE to play as a boy again?! Argh!
helen-louise, still not male.
and I’ll cut & paste this so when the buffer clears to “undefined”, I can paste it back in.

So we know what Munchlax’s Ability is now, then? That’s interesting. Judging by the picture of the Snorlax Hyper Beaming over on the left side of the screen, I think there’s a fairly good chance that you get the Munchlax in a similar way as you got Duking’s Plusle in Colosseum(though you wouldn’t be able to trade it until it evolved).

i agree with most of what was said already, like how the fleshed-out background is good and that the graphics are improved. personally, i’m not excited about playing another colo-type game. i enjoyed myself at first, but i got tired of it. the battles go so slow! and they’re very often! if they added actual battle animations, such as one pokemon making contact with the other, it would be more enjoyable. i would also like to see wild ‘mons in this game ‘cause i like to have different teams from everyone else.
i’m still waiting for that pokemon game where you actually design your char. this guy is cool looking, but i can picture my own char looking much cooler. i could go on about my dream pokemon mmo, but that’s for another forum.
By Jeff on May. 16th, 2005 at 1:51 AM
It would be too complex to have them show the pokemon making contact, maybe eventually but they just don’t have the technology now.
I hope this game is better that the first one, and not just some “OMG CATCH LUGIA!!!!” filler. Wild Pokemon would be cool, I swear I heard somewhere that they would be in the game.
By Emperor ServingSpoon on May. 16th, 2005 at 11:10 AM
I think it’d be cool if the Shadow Lugia had more “Shadow” moves, in addition, or instead of Shadow rush. That would make it feel special, and if it’s entire storyline will be revolving around the Pokemon, they could at least make it have something aside from appearance to set it apart from other Shadow Pokemon.

One of the reasons I never wanted a 3D RPG of Pokemon to appear on a console system is because I knew the battles would be as slow as in Stadium. Likewise, some comments above tell of how slow the Colosseum battles were, and how there were too many of these slow battles at that. And people also ask for wild Pokemon, so you can have ever /more/ slow battles, especially when you’re trying to get from point A to point B quickly =P
By Woopert on May. 16th, 2005 at 7:05 PM
Meowth, I can actually think of quite a few things they could do to speed up the battles, for instance get rid of the useless overhead shot at the beginning of every battle in Colosseum, have a defeated Pokémon start its faint sequence immediately instead of doing its usual “take a hit” movement, and so on.

I want wild Pokemon.
I want the ability to turn off battle animations, as in the GBA games, to speed up battles.
Done, both problems and complaints solved.

Hm. I’m not usually one to care much about graphics in a video game… but those location shots are beautifully detailed.
Plus, I also like the style they’ve used with the humans.
Personally, I liked Colosseum. I’ll admit it was a bit tedius (I still haven’t purified all of my Shadow Pokémon), but I still found it fun.
I think the way the purification process could be improved is if it doesn’t take nearly as long in XD as it did in Colosseum to purify Shadow Pokémon, huh. Or maybe even more exclusive Shadow Moves (if Shadow Pokémon are meant to be war machines, shouldn’t they have multiple powerful attacks? Not just one rather okay move?).
Shadow Lugia looks odd. It must be something more than just a simple Shadow Pokémon.
It’s hard to make a firm assumption on XD when all we have so far is a few CoroCoro scans with minimal details. Yes, Shadow Pokémon are in. But it doesn’t necessarily mean other means of getting Pokémon are out.
Personally, I’m hoping for Contests and other such things to pass the time (why were Contest Move stats given in Colosseum when you couldn’t even do Contests?).

Thanks for the info on XD.
(btw, it’s Webbeh. rm2k? ring a bell? send me an email, i’d love to catch up!)

I wonder if there will be other shadow pokemon aside from lugia who have different appearances. If lugia is what the story is based on, then I wouldn’t count on it.
BpmΩ, you made some interesting points. Shadow pokemon are supposed to be fighting machines, so there should really be other special moves. I think they put contest stats in expecting you to transfer your pokemon to your game boy versions. When a colo pokemon learns a move, you can judge it by looking at both in-battle effects and contest effects. That way, people who like contests can decide wether or not to trade that pokemon to r/s.

Nintendo’s own page has some details about XD:
[ link ] (www.nintendo.com)
Seems that the US title (or at least, the working title) is “Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.”
And like Colosseum’s Story Mode, it will be in the Orre region, too. Which will most likely eliminate the chances of wild Pokémon, huh.

i hope they put some shinys or farfetch’d in
I wonder…
With the hidden Shadow Pokemon Text you found earlier in Colosseum, was Colo. Going to be much larger, but cut for time purposes, and this is a Colosseum Part 2, with the hidden shadow pokemon from Colo?
And hey! A main character with a fleshed out background AND a sibling! I was waiting for that :)
