Pokémon Forever

Bulbapedia Goes Live

Posted on 14 Feb 2005

Bulbagarden has just released its Bulbapedia, a wiki for Pokemon. Check it out!

At one time I was looking into starting a small wiki for PokeFor, but for reasons I won’t get into, that idea was trampled. Bulbagarden, however, has just released its Bulbapedia, a wiki for Pokemon.

What is a wiki? A wiki allows anyone to add pages of information and edit what’s already on there. If you sign up at Bulbapedia, be sure to read through the manual of style, so you know how things work. Otherwise, you’ll be adding chaos instead of order.

Remember, write your own material! Don’t steal from other web sites. And as the Bulbapedia says, “Please note that all contributions to Bulbapedia are considered to be released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license. If you don’t want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then don’t submit it here.”

You know, you could’ve given us a chance to announce our own opening first Meowth. ;p

But in any case, yes, Bulbapedia opens today. =) Here’s hoping that it lives up to all our hopes and dreams for it. With this opening will soon come the long-awaited re-opening of the site (Contentless, mind you, seeing as that’ll all be on the ‘pedia from now on), and hopefully we’ll be bringing everyone a few of our other “secret projects” within the next few weeks to complete the icing on the cake.

Looks absolutley awesome. I had no idea something this great was even in the works. :D

Talk to Zhenlin, Mukashi – he’s the one that asked if I could post about it ^_^;; If I had known, I would have held off.

By Mukashi on Feb. 14th, 2005 at 9:17 AM

I’m sure the others will be glad to know that. ^^;; We put quite a bit of effort into keeping it under wraps. Trust me, it was difficult not bursting out with the news that we had this on the way. We’ve all been rather excited with it.

So…what are you waiting for? Get to contributing. ;p

By Mukashi on Feb. 14th, 2005 at 9:20 AM

Whoops, guess I cross-posted with Meowth there.

…why are you calling me Mukashi? You should know by now Mukashi = Archaic. ;p

Anyway, yeah, I heard. Doesn’t really matter, just forces us to get our rears in gear a bit quicker. We already had everything for the opening prepared, sans an opening speach from Editor-in-Chief evkl, so it doesn’t do us any harm. Heck, to be honest, it does us a lot of good. I had no idea you’d be doing us the massive favour of advertising it on your site, even though you’ve already been making significant contributions to the ‘pedia for us.

By Meowth346 on Feb. 14th, 2005 at 10:38 AM

Actually, I didn’t know that that was you, Archaic ^^;; I just went by the name that you posted under here. I figured you (“Mukashi”) were someone from BMG that I didn’t know, and was potentially very angry over my posting this ^^;; Again, if I had known that it wasn’t posted about at BMG yet, I would have held off. I didn’t even think to check about that. Since, as far as I know, ZhenLin’s played a big part on the creation of the ‘pedia, when he asked if I could post about it, I posted about it.

By Mukashi on Feb. 14th, 2005 at 11:03 AM

Ah. ^^;; I only use Archaic at Bulbagarden these days, since it’s the name I held there on the original site. Everywhere else, it’s Mukashi now. I thought you’d recognise the word from Japanese though. ^^;

I’m guessing Zhenlin didn’t think you’d post it up straight away. ^^;; Oh well, I’m not angry at all, so no problems. ^^;

Great idea! I was just wondering, for all the pages on your wiki, will you be the using original names, or English names?

By Mukashi on Feb. 14th, 2005 at 11:19 AM

We do have a Manual of Style You know. ;p

Naming conventions

Naming conventions in Bulbapedia have been determined to go by English names of characters unless a character is more widely known by his or her Japanese name. An example of this would be Jirarudan for Lawrence III; however, for “main” characters like Ash, English names are always used. Redirects from the name of the other language should be created in order to alleviate confusion. For instance, the page Satoshi redirects to “Ash Ketchum”, and the page “Lawrence III” redirects to Jirarudan.

Also, an article titled with a Pokémon name with a very well known instance in the canon will redirect to the article for that character. Therefore, the article Meowth will redirect to Meowth (Team Rocket), and the article Mewtwo will redirect to Mewtwo (character). The articles on the Pokémon in general should be titled Meowth (Pokémon) and Mewtwo (Pokémon) respectively.

This trend should be continued if possible throughout Bulbapedia for ease of use to all involved. If there is debate as to which name is more proper, contact a Bulbapedia administrator.

I used to go to Bulbagarden, until it disappeared and I never found it again…

Looks good!

When was this? Besides the whole thing with the site dying in early 2002, and me resurrecting it with Bulba’s blessing in late 2003, we’ve changed domains once (to .net from .com), and servers a few times too. ^^;

By Ledian_X on Feb. 14th, 2005 at 4:52 PM

Yeah. Like I said over at BMG the Bulbapedia is up and running. I’ve been helping evkl and Meowth with the games areas. I’ve been getting a little writers’ block so we could welcome any and all help.

I’ve got the basic: Generation I-III up, egg groups, history and a couple others up. Gen IV should be up when we have more than Lucario, Munchlax and the DS games.

Excellent idea; my congrats. I hope this becomes something taht will unite the worldwide Pokemon community. I’ll try and fins some free time and contribute bits of knowledge sometime. For whatever you need, you have my support :)

By GrnMarvl13 on Feb. 14th, 2005 at 11:26 PM

Like I said on Bulbagarden, I’m VERY happy to see two site owners working together for the benefit of the community. With any luck, this won’t be the exception to the rule, but will usher in a new age.

Yes, I know that sounds crazy, but frankly, I’m crazy like that.

Adding technical information including structure specifics and data storage.

Before I continue, this is the kind of stuff you want on there, right? Like it’s an encyclopedia or a knowledge base?

By evkl on Feb. 15th, 2005 at 3:26 AM

Yep. Everything–any kind of information, be it generic on any topic related to anything Pokemon or something very specific, like the technicalities of a Ship or Game formula, is what we want.

By Emperor ServingSpoon on Feb. 15th, 2005 at 11:06 AM

I think I lost track of it sometime about halfway through GSC at the latest… I don’t entirely remember how it happened.

By Icy_Vaporeon on Feb. 20th, 2005 at 4:49 PM

I know this isn’t on topic, but the Pokedex will not show properly. But on topic, what is Bulbapedia?

By Mukashi on Feb. 21st, 2005 at 10:49 AM

Why not click the links in the news post and see for yourself? ;)

By J on Feb. 21st, 2005 at 11:24 PM

Hmm. I “founded” a Pokemon wiki just recently, too. Oh well, there goes my wiki.

By Porygon on Feb. 22nd, 2005 at 1:02 AM

^ Yeah, I found a link to your wiki earlier today, I thought that was a little odd…

What’re the odds? Heh…

By MiSsInGnO on Feb. 26th, 2005 at 5:26 PM

This wikipedia definitly rocks :)

What I like most in this project is the fact that now I have a place where to put results of some of my researches :)
