Pokémon Forever

$dex->addArtwork($sugimori); $pokedex++;

Posted on 22 Feb 2005

I’ve added Ken Sugimori’s artwork to the Pokedex.

I’ve added Ken Sugimori’s artwork to the Pokedex. It’s at the bottom of each page with the sprites. The only missing artwork is Speed Form Deoxys.

Great! Where did you find it?

By Kein on Feb. 22nd, 2005 at 8:38 PM

The official Japanese site has a Pokedex of its own, consisting of the basic information on every Pokemon. It also features the official artwork for each Pokemon. The downside is in that the images are deliberately darkened as to match the layout, not to mention that they may not be manually copied. As you can see, Meowth has extracted all of it, matching it to a transparent background and making it available to others. It certainly surpasses any kind of scans of the artwork, for which we he have had to settle up till now.

Hey Meowth I was looking in your Pokemon spirit section and I was wondering if you wanted more?

BTW great job on adding official art.

I’m fine the sprites I have currently on the site. I don’t plan on adding Crystal or Emerald animations, which can be gotten elsewhere, nor any other games’ sprites.

By adamgnome on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 3:29 AM

You wouldn’t happen to know where Emerald animations were would you in the first place? X_x

I love Ken Sugimori art, but I saw most of it already on some poster from Nintendo Power.

Iggybuff overpowers me with cuteness. >_> I wish Ken Sugimori redid all the other Johto Pokemon though.

By Animelee on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 4:43 AM

Since 1998, I’ve been aiming to draw like Sugimori, and everytime I think I’m even close to him, he releases a new piece of art with his updated drawing style, and I’m back at square one.

Great job on the PokéDex, sir. If you need the Speed Deoxys Sugimori art, let me know.

By Meowth346 on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 5:10 AM

Arty2’s web site at [ link ] (users.otenet.gr) might have the Emerald frames (each Pokemon is two frames which is animated through various graphic manipulation methods on the GBA), and I know there’s a place with some (all?) of them animated, though I know not where.

As for Speed Form Deoxys, I want it to be the same size and quality and alpha-transparency as the other artworks, so I’ll wait until/if the Pokedex.co.jp Pokedex is updated with its artwork. But thanks for the offer.

By Woopert on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 5:15 AM

adamgnome, I’m sure Sugimori-sama will redo the rest of the GSC Poké’s eventually; hopefully for D/P…

Now Meowth, could I ask for your permission to use your images for Bulbapedia, or are you already planning to submit them yourself? I noticed you already saw some of the images I made (from the same source as yours), but it looks like you did a better job making them transparent that I did. :P

By Meowth346 on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 6:51 AM

I can’t claim ownership over the images, Woopert. All I did was extract them. So, have at it. And if it’s easily possible to replace images, feel free to replace all the ones that you’ve already done. I wonder how easy it would be to write a script to mass-upload them to the ‘pedia.

By Meowth346 on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 7:18 AM

I’ve left a note on BMG’s forums, Woopert, asking if there’s a way for a staff member to mass-upload the artwork, so I’d wait until there’s a reply on that from Zhen Lin (the post is in the ‘pedia forum) before uploading too many more.

By PurpleKecleon on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 8:49 AM

It figures that I go and look up Jumpluff and there’re some weird lines around its… puffs o_O Is it just me…?

By Meowth346 on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 8:57 AM

That’s how the artwork came out, it seems. I don’t know why they’re there. You don’t suppose that’s sketch outline that accidentally got into the finaly, do you?

By Anon on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 10:12 AM

I have all Emerald animations. (Took a while too).

The site I got them from you can only take 150 per IP address.

By Meowth346 on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 12:32 PM

Woopert, if you haven’t seen already, I’ve mass-uploaded the Pokemon to Bulbapedia, so you don’t have to worry about uploading any more of them.

By Filb on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 12:38 PM

I saw updated Sugimori artwork of Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile in a scan of the Wonderland magazine made by nYoo.

By Kein on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 3:31 PM

Other than Speed Deoxys, Ken Sugimori also drew new artwork for Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Rayquaza, Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile upon the release of Emerald. The former four are available in some form on the official sites, but making the background transparent should prove to be an hassle. As for the latter three, they have only been shown in the Pokemon Wonderland magazine, not on any official site.

Other than that, all of the Kanto Pokemon and some of the Johto Pokemon who have been given new artwork in honor of FireRed/LeafGreen, have older artwork which the official site neglects to offer. Again, they are bound to be available on some website, but chances are that the quality is degraded somewhat and that the background is not easy to handle. I do wish that the official site would be updated with this, as well, but one would think that they would have done it by now had they had any intention to do so (the other 80 Johto Pokemon only have the old artwork, which the site does offer, of course).

By nYoo on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 5:51 PM

Yeah, there they are: [ link ] (www.psychoboost.com)

Too bad totodile is covering chikorita and cyndaquil :S

I hope they will be added to the [ link ] (www.pokemon.co.jp) Pokédex soon :S

By Woopert on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 5:54 PM

Meowth, good job mass-uploading the Pokémon artwork, though I see what PK means about Jumpluff. O_o

I also looked at the images in IE, which shows them with a gray background. Maybe there oughta be a note saying “best viewed with a modern web browser such as Firefox or Opera” or something…

By Meowth346 on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 7:00 PM

I don’t care how they look on PokeFor, but I’m under the impression that the wiki software used applies an alpha filter that IE supports which will remove that background from the image when shown on a page. If not, I can talk with ZhenLin about adding it.

By anon on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 7:32 PM

Hmm… I use Fire Fox most of the time and when I used IE to see the pics there was no grey background…

By Anonymous on Feb. 23rd, 2005 at 10:24 PM

Nyoo: I have a bad feeling that pic of the GSC starters might have been meant to be a single image. :/

And Meowth: Sorry to go off-topic, but one site on your “Links” page (Lindenbaum) has moved. The new site (PokéSyo) is located here: [ link ] (soara.fc2web.com)

By nYoo on Feb. 24th, 2005 at 12:55 AM

Anonymous: ??? That’s a scan from a magazine, I can’t change the way the artwork is set.

Well, if you want, Meowth, I’ll cut out Totodile, resize it to a size similar to the size of the other artwork on Bulbapedia and your Pokedex and export it to a png file with alpha transparency and send it to you. Then, you’d atleast have one of them already. ;)

By Water Pokémon Master on Feb. 24th, 2005 at 4:30 AM

How are you making them transparent, Meowth? I saved all of the Ken artwork off the Japanese site a while ago, but everytime I make them transparent in Photoshop, they are either totally pixely or I have to zoom in to the image and crop out everything. What is this alpha transparency thing? Is it an easy way of making the background transparent?

By Meowth346 on Feb. 24th, 2005 at 5:01 AM

Alpha transparency means that you can partially see through it. For example, if you have a Pokemon where the whole image is 50% transparent, and put it on a web site with a background of repeated Poke Balls, you can barely see the Poke Balls through the Pokemon. Each pixel of the outer edges of the outlines of these Pokemon images has different percents of transparency, so you can see through it on its background, and it looks better than without the transparency.

H didn’t add the transparency, that’s how the images come. It’s all in how you obtain them.

By Leafer on Feb. 26th, 2005 at 12:21 AM

why is everyone making such a big deal out of this? O_o Or am I missing something? A zip folder of all 386 including all the dexoys version were made available on a site months ago. You can also get them at Turquoise City.

By Emperor ServingSpoon on Feb. 26th, 2005 at 5:36 AM

Well, I’ve never been to Turquoise City, and haven’t seen the zip anywhere, whereas I visit this site regularly. So that’s why it’s nice that they’re here.

By Anonymous Coward on Feb. 27th, 2005 at 8:05 PM

Emperor ServingSpoon: [ link ] (www.turquoisecity.com)

They’ve had them for quite a long time… Anyway, great that this place has them now!

By Meowth346 on Feb. 27th, 2005 at 8:57 PM

Turquoise City’s are designed for use on a black background. The ones in my Pokedex, although they have proper alpha transparency, they really only work on a white background, as I’ve found that Spinarak and some others have pieces of white background that didn’t get made transparent, and Lapras’s back is partially transparent, both of which create problems for use on a non-white background.

That aside, I am working on something with these that’ll make it even better for PokeFor’s dex.

By bagszi on Mar. 5th, 2005 at 12:09 AM

Hy! How about this? [ link ] (p2kmovie2.netdisk.hu)

(I hope it’s working…)

By Woopert on Mar. 6th, 2005 at 2:36 AM

Bagszi, I’m afraid your version of the Speed Deoxys artwork isn’t quite what Meowth346 is looking for–it’s in the GIF format (Meowth prefers PNG), and does not look good at all on a white background. :P

However, I noticed that Pokémon.co.jp’s Flash Pokédex ( [ link ] (www.pokemon.co.jp) ) has been updated with the Speed Deoxys artwork, which I’m sure Meowth can extract for use here. BTW, Meowth, do you use a copy of Macromedia Flash to extract images?
